Overview
Aetna is one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States, serving approximately 23 million members. As part of CVS Health since 2018, Aetna offers a wide range of health plans including employer-sponsored, individual, Medicare, and Medicaid coverage.
Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), Aetna is required to provide coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatment at the same level as medical and surgical benefits. This means if your plan covers inpatient medical care, it must also cover inpatient substance abuse treatment when medically necessary.
Aetna manages behavioral health services through its internal behavioral health department and partners with Coventry Health Care (acquired in 2013) to provide access to a broad network of treatment facilities and professionals across the country.

Finding In-Network Providers
Aetna maintains an extensive network of behavioral health providers including hospitals, detox centers, and treatment facilities across the United States. In-network facilities have agreed to negotiated rates with Aetna, which typically results in lower out-of-pocket costs for members.
To find in-network detox and treatment facilities, members can use Aetna's online provider directory or call the member services number on their insurance card. When calling, specifically ask for facilities that specialize in substance use disorder treatment and medical detoxification.

Typical Coverage Duration
Initial detox authorization is commonly 3-7 days, depending on substance type and clinical presentation. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal often receive longer initial authorizations due to medical complexity.
The treatment facility will conduct ongoing utilization reviews with Aetna to extend authorization if continued treatment is medically necessary. These reviews typically occur every 2-3 days during inpatient stays.
Following detox, Aetna typically covers step-down levels of care (residential, PHP, IOP) when clinical criteria are met. The total continuum of care may range from several weeks to several months depending on individual needs.
Note: Coverage duration varies by individual plan and clinical circumstances. There is no universal limit—coverage continues as long as treatment meets medical necessity criteria.
Helpful Tips
These practical suggestions can help you navigate the insurance process more effectively.
- 1Call the behavioral health number on your card (not general member services) for faster assistance with substance abuse treatment questions.
- 2Request a case manager if you're navigating complex treatment needs—they can help coordinate care and authorizations.
- 3If your claim is denied, you have the right to appeal. Ask for the denial reason in writing and request an expedited appeal if treatment is urgent.
- 4Verify both detox AND step-down care coverage before admission to avoid gaps in treatment.
- 5Ask the treatment facility if they are "in-network" specifically for your plan type, as Aetna has multiple networks.
